Yes, you can set your running number format for item codes to follow the short code of item group.

1.	Go to <span style='color:red'>Tools > Options > Stock > General Stock Setting</span>; 

2.	Look into Automatic Generation of Item Code Format, key in the format style that you prefer. You may also set the starting number. 

3.	Click on <span style='color:red'>OK</span> to save your setting.

Go to <span style='color:red'>Stock > Stock Group Maintenance</span>; you may click on <span style='color:red'>New</span> to create new stock group or select existing item group and click on <span style='color:red'>Edit</span>.

Define the code, short code and Description of this Item Group. Click on <span style='color:red'>OK</span> to save.

Go to <span style='color:red'>Stock Item Maintenance > Create New Stock Item</span>.

When creating a new stock item, first select its item Group, then only click on <span style='color:red'>+</span> button to auto generate its item code. In my example, the running item code to be generated is <span style='color:red'>SW00001</span>. Fill in the neccesary information and click on <span style='color:red'>OK</span> to save your new item.
