Troubleshooting: Backup Error – Cannot create file ‘C:\AutoCount Data\xxx Data.mdf MSSQL DBCC9’ because it already exists. Change the file path or the file name, and retry the operation.

Question: When I try to backup, system prompted error ‘Backup Failed. Database Error found. Unknown Sql Exception Cannot create file ‘C:\AutoCount Data\xxx_Data.mdf_MSSQL_DBCC9’ because it already exists. Change the file path or the file name, and retry the operation.

Possible Reason :

Your server being shut down or reboot while backup was in progress (run of the DBCC CHECKDB task). Now when you perform backup, there is a file that causing duplicate conflict.


Solution :

Rename the file name or change the file path.

1) Using file explorer, navigate to the file location show in the backup error. (C:\AutoCount Data)

2) You may rename the file name or move the file to another path. To move, cut the file and paste it into another path.


3) Click Continue.


4) Now you should be able to backup your data.
